Maroochy River , a last minute decision
With 20 - 25 knot SE winds , the decision to move the club fish to the Maroochy river was what seemed to be our only option.  Despite the conditions , we had seven club members turn out for this outing which could have easily been subject to a lazy Sunday morning in bed . To say the conditions were tough would have been fairly accurate , Billy Jones and myself fished most of the morning in Coolum creek which shoots off the Maroochy in the upper reaches. The idea was to pin a couple of Bream with poppers and maybe try for some Jacks, I love it when a plan fails too unravel . We fished the creek with Snowy and his partner Dags , I think they were in a similar situation with a lot of fresh still in the upper reaches , this resulted in a lot of looks and not much in the way of positive hookups. New member Joe De Jager and his wife Krista , were also to join us on our way up into the upper reaches , with a similar story as well . Joe also took a run down to the mouth to find some cleaner water but with the vast expanse of open water , the wind became a real nuisance for holding position , that combined with a raging tide required a lot of patience.  Frank Redpath also joined us on the outing and decided after our Boat Ramp meeting that he would scout the mouth early on . Frank manged a nice size Flathead after a couple of hours fishing , well done Frank. I believe Frank used weighted files such as clousers to pepper the drop offs , where the lizards hang out. Frank also reports that he was talking to some guys using poppers on the flats who were successful in catching whiting in good numbers , sounds like good fun for wading with a five weight , maybe next time. In a last ditch attempt to crack these bream Bill and myself made our way into the maroochy waters canal system. Talk about smart fish , on one occasion a resident on the canals threw some bread out into the water only for it to be attacked by a dozen or so bream . I asked the guy if he wouldn't mind if we got a better look at this pets in which he replied go for your life . I made a cast that landed virtually on top of the bread only to have the Bream eat there way around my booby fly , amazing !! So it was doughnuts all round in the canal , however the upper reaches fished well for the conditions , its a great place for poppers when there is less fresh |
